Nursing Philosophy

Nursing has been described by many authors as either a calling, a craft, or an art. These labels convey to me that the concept of nursing is unique to each practitioner. As a nurse, my own philosophy is founded on three principles: Individualised care, Accountability and Professionalism.

I believe in providing indivualised, holistic care to my clients. This means working in partnership with each client to recognise and meet their unique health needs. In daily practice I utilise communication skills to develop therapeutic rapport, while promoting health and providing education about disease and treatment. It is my duty to ensure a clients individual rights and personal beliefs are respected and valued within my nursing practice. It is my responsibility to remain accountable for my daily practice by actively participating in both multi-disciplinary and nursing teams. This means that I recognise my own emerging skills and how I can contribute these to the benefit of the MDT while remaining an advocate for the client. In addition, I also reflect on my own limitations and how I can offset these through the support of my nursing colleagues, to improve my clinical judgment. I strongly believe in protecting my clients through my own commitment to professionalism. This incorporates my ongoing professional development as a life-long learner, alignment of my practice with the code of ethics and the RN competencies, as well as an expectation of acting as a role-model for those in my care.

Skills and Strengths

My experience as a caregiver, educator, graphic designer and nursing student has allowed me to develop a number of transferable skills and personal qualities that allow me to adapt to new and challenging environments.
